Day 2- the anytime top

The top I made on day 2 was not in the plan. I ran across Kelly's blog and her story was very inspiring. She put a tutorial online for this top and I absolutely loved it. She moves around every 2 years. She is a wife of a foreign service officer. Currently she resides on a tiny island off the coast of Northern Australia.

This is what Kelly says...
"...it is a VERY war ravaged nation who only won it's independence a decade ago. They are a wonderful people although incredible impoverished. The majority of the capital was burned to the ground but it is slowly being rebuilt. When I came to Dili we were allotted a certain amount of weight for items we wanted to bring with us. The few items that were undebatable were my sewing machines, my camera and a heap of fabric. Well, I ended up with a little under 15 yards of fabric. The local “fabric stores” only carry solid colors or mildly hideous floral prints. This left me with a challenge. Although we have diplomatic pouch, making it so we have a US address and anything shipped to us costs the same amount it would if we were living in the states, I decided to see how long I could make those 15 yards of cute fabric last, and what new patterns I could make up."

These are her rules for sewing.......

"I can only use fabric I either brought with me or is sent to me by friends, family or readers {editor's note: ummm...I wonder if we can help her out gals?!}. The only fabric I personally can purchase must be found locally. This does include when I am on vacation (They have some cool fabric in Bali!). Once the fabric I brought with me is out that is it, I have to make due with only local items. I am considering this a Global Experiment in Sewing and hope to get lots of feed back and suggestions. We will be moving every two years with a month back in the states in between so things should get pretty fun as I find fabric all over the world."

Ucreate is another blog I love and they just recently featured her.

Her little girl Abby is wearing the anytime top. Kelly shares the tutorial with us online. You should definitely check out this one and all the other ones she has posted. I want to make them all. I am also planning on sending her some really cool fabric.

I sat down and tried to follow the pattern by looking at her pictures. There was one problem....I had no clue if it was going to fit ella or my niece Brooklyn. I made a few mistakes along the way as well. The first one was I didn't have much of the apple fabric and I cut way too small. I then had to cut another piece and just work with what I have. That is why there is a huge line down the middle of the fabric. I had to improvise. I plan on making another one soon. I will post when I do a remake. I also got a little confused on how to do the neck. It was a great day 2 project because it left me wanting to do another one. I can't wait to try to get the next one right. Anyway....Here is mine......

Here are the covered button holes I put on the top.

Can't wait to see what I can get into tonight. Happy Sewing!
